EF offices take up the entire sixth floor of the office building I work in. Yesterday- one of my days off- I got a tour of the offices of floors seven through ten. Residing on these floors is a company called, DHGate.com, the 1st cross-border B2B e-commerce platform in China. It’s very similar to Amazon from the retail perspective. It’s CEO is a very non-assuming lady who is a “pioneer of e-commerce in China” who’s first company was sold to Amazon. Some of her acknowledgements include “China Top 10 IT Influential Leaders” in 2010 and “Top 25 Influencing Figures for China Economy” by Business Weekly in 2009. She’s also a student at EF. Her name is Diane Wang
She comes by a couple of times a month to brush up on her English although she speaks English fluently. Still, it doesn’t hurt to continuously polish and perfect her fluency. She travels a lot to the west and she is always meeting with top western business people. Just last month she met with Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg to discuss empowering small businesses and women.
I greatly enjoy our “one on one” English lessons. She is a “powerhouse” with an amazingly well-grounded philosophy of life. Upon meeting her, you would never know you were speaking with one of the most influential people in mainland China. She is so very humble. Needless to say, when she invited me to tour her offices, I jumped at the chance. Here are the pictures. I still can’t believe she would want to have her picture taken with me. The wonder of it all!
Impressive. We had no idea you were going to China to be a high-level business ambassador.
Very interesting, Brian. I bet you didn’t think you’d have such a notable person for a student. The picture in DHGate, showing the lights reflecting in the floor of that office, is so pristine – looks like you could eat off the floor. Regarding the “dead” talk, you do look like you could use some sleep with those circles, but otherwise, you look good to me. 🙂
